Back to the list of countries | Original FCO Article- The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all but essential travel to within 60km of the Kenya-Somali border; to Kiwayu and coastal areas north of Pate Island; to Garissa District; to the Eastleigh area of Nairobi; and to low income areas of Nairobi, including all township or slum areas. There is a high threat from terrorism, including kidnapping. There has been a spate of attacks in Nairobi (especially the area of Eastleigh), Mombasa, and North Eastern Province. Further attacks are likely. See Terrorism
and KidnappingOn 4 March at least 15 people died, including a number of police officers, after attacks by armed youths on police stations and clashes with police in the Mombasa area. Take extra care in the area and be vigilant, particularly in public places.
Elections took place on 4 March 2013. Presidential results were announced on 9 March but are subject to legal challenge. The Supreme Court is likely to rule on this challenge by 30 March. Tensions may remain high in the lead up to the announcement and afterwards. Follow developments in the media, be vigilant at all times and avoid all demonstrations or large gatherings. At the last elections in 2007, violence, both inter-ethnic and local, left over 1,000 dead and 600,000 displaced. Localised violence does occur in Kenya, but is not normally directed towards foreigners. See Local travel.
There are incidents of crime including mugging, armed robbery and carjacking, particularly in the large cities. See Crime
