  • The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all travel to Mali. Unless you have pressing reasons to remain, you should leave now by commercial means. You should not travel to the north of Mali under any circumstances.

  • There is a high threat from terrorism. A number of Westerners have been kidnapped by terrorists in Mali and the Sahel region. Following French military intervention in Mali, there is a high threat of retaliatory kidnap or violent attacks against Western interests in Mali, including Bamako. See Terrorism

  • In light of the ongoing military action against separatist groups, a State of Emergency exists across the whole country. No curfew has been established, but changes could be announced at any time. Much of central and northern Mali remains effectively outside government control. See Political situation

  • If you decide to visit or remain in Mali you should review your own security arrangements constantly and be prepared to leave at short notice if necessary. Make sure your travel documents are up to date and that you have visas for neighbouring countries. You should also keep a stock of food and water in case you need to stay at home for several days.

  • The British Embassy in Bamako is open, but its ability to deliver full consular services remains severely reduced. If you need consular assistance you should contact the British Embassy in Dakar. See Consular assistance

  • Take out comprehensive travel and medical insurance before you travel.
