FCO Travel Advice for - Congo (Democratic Republic)

  • The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all travel to eastern and north eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

  • The only exception to this is the town of Bukavu, to which the FCO advise against all but essential travel, and to avoid travelling around alone and at night.

  • We have received reports of unrest in Lubumbashi. Keep a low profile and avoid any large crowds and demonstrations. Stay alert to local political developments. See Political situation
  • The security situation in eastern DRC remains extremely volatile. If you choose to remain in eastern and north eastern DRC, including Bukavu, you should be aware that our ability to provide consular assistance will be extremely limited. There is a low threat from terrorism. See Terrorism

  • Street crime and robbery, including by individuals posing as plain clothes police, is common. Beware of gangs promising you cut price gold and diamonds. International non-governmental organisations in Kinshasa and Goma have been targeted. See Crime

  • Take out comprehensive travel and medical insurance before you travel.
