  • The FCO advise against all travel to areas of the Far North Province within 25km of the Nigeria/Cameroon border and north of the city of Maroua. On 19 February, 7 French tourists were kidnapped near the Nigeria border and their whereabouts are currently unknown. See Local travel.

  • The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all travel to the Bakassi Peninsula and within 20km of the border with Nigeria in the Ndian Division of the South West Province. See Local travel

  • The FCO advise against all travel to within 40km of the border with Chad. See Local travel

  • The FCO advise against all but essential travel to areas of the Far North Province south of the town of Maroua. See Local travel

  • The FCO advise against all but essential travel to within 40 kilometres of the border with the Central African Republic. See Local Travel

  • There is a general threat from terrorism. In a video message released to the press on 18 March, Boko Haram threatened Cameroon with suicide bombings and further kidnappings. See Terrorism.

  • The Government of Cameroon is expected to cut fuel subsidies in the near future. This may trigger strikes and civil unrest. You should avoid all crowds, political demonstrations and rallies.

  • There have been attacks on commercial shipping vessels in the Gulf of Guinea, including the coastline of Cameroon around the Douala port. Take great care when travelling in coastal waters.

  • There has been an increase in violence in the Limbe area of Cameroon and incidents of armed robbery involving taxis hailed from the roadside in Yaoundé. See Crime

  • Despite the high crime levels, most visits to Cameroon are trouble-free. Only a few British nationals needed consular assistance in the past year. See Consular assistance statistics
